Can Vitamin K harm my dog if I'm unsure about poison ingestion?

If your dog ate anti-coagulant rat poison, it makes no sense to wait to give him the Vit. K1. Vit. K1 will only work if your dog ate rat poison that is an anticoagulant. You should contact your vet's office for a recommendation as we are not in a position legally to give out dosages. In order to do legally so we would have to have a patient-veterinarian-owner relationship with you. Your veterinarian also knows your dog and the potential risks for your dog receiving this medication. If your dog ate Bromethalin rat poison, Vit K1 will not work. It makes the brain swell and is moderately to severely toxic. There is no antidote, only supportive care, such as inducing emesis (vomiting, to remove as much poison as possible), charcoal (to hopefully neutralize some of the poison, iv fluids and medication to reduce the cerebral edema (brain swelling). As with many poisons, the dose is important. You will need to monitor your dog for a few days for incoordination (ataxia), tremors, seizures

I'm very sorry you were poisoned by hateful neighbors! That's just horrible, and I hope you reported them to the police. I wouldn't give vitamin Ki to Merrill, she will not need the extra Vitamin K in her diet as her food provides all the vitamins and nutrients she needs to be healthy.

Vitamin K1 is usually dosed at 2.5 mg/kg twice daily as an antidote for anticoagulant rodenticide and giving with a fatty meal is recommended. I would definitely check in with the vet who instructed you to give the medication before starting however - that dose works out to 34 mg for a 30 lb dog, and that would be a lot of 100 mcg tablets to give. There is a veterinary version of Vitamin K1 that comes in 25 and 50 mg tablets that would work better. Your assumption is correct, under 2 hours vomiting MUST always be induce when a toxic material has been or is suspected of being ingested. The problem with mouse/rat poisoning is that it is quantity dependent, if he ingested too much, no amount of vitamin K will save him unfortunately, and it is still too soon to know as some of those poisoning have a delayed action mechanism which means they can start working 2-3 weeks after ingestion. You must continue the vitamin K at home for at least 3 weeks and hope for the best.

Unless you have a very large dog, this could be a serious problem. You should seek veterinary attention as vitamin D poisoning can be life threatening. Consider the following: 5,000 IU of vitamin D = 0.125mg. Your dog ingested 60. 0.125mg x 60 = 7.5mg of vitamin D. Veterinary attention is indicated when more than 0.1mg/kg of Vitamin D is ingested. Life threatening effects are possible at 0.5mg/kg. Divide 7.5 by your dog's weight in kg, to determine the dose ingested. Even if you have a 100lb dog, he/she may be in serious danger,

There is no other antidote other than the vitamin K. I would skip the next injection and start with the tablets. It is usually less of a dose at a single time compared to the injections so it will decrease the chance of another reaction. If a reaction does occur again, I would contact your vet to see about prescribing addition medicine to help fight the reaction

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Jade! I would have her seen by a Vet first. They can check her PT/PTT and be sure she isn't anemic and in need of a blood transfusion if you think an anticoagulant rodenticide has been ingested. The antidote is Vit K. Other causes of vaginal bleeding are an infected uterus (pyometra) which is a surgical emergency. We can not prescribe drugs or dosing because legally we would need to examine the pet first. It's fine that it has been in the fridge and will be just as effective. It's possible that Maple's vet recommended it be in the fridge so that it is not exposed to as much light, because light is degrading to Vitamin K. I would recommend leaving it there tonight and calling tomorrow to clarify.

A bruise typicallyl is not going to be swollen. I would suspect that your pet may have an abscess or seroma. A picture of the area in question would have been helpful as well. However, giving Vit K in cases where you suspect that your pet has ingested rat poison, is not going to be harmful to the pet in most cases, especially if they are monitored by your veterinarian and given the appropriate amount of medication. Relieving the pressure is ideal if this is a seroma or abscess; however, I would not recommend doing this yourself b/c of the risk of hittiing a major blood vessel (depending on the location of the swelling). Also, most pets don't tolerate draining of seroma's well without proper restraint and sometimes a local anesthetic. I would also discuss with your vet about possible pressure bandaging the leg to prevent further seroma formation. I would recommend going forward with the blood tests as well, to rule out any coagulation abnormality and also get a good overall picutre o
