My dog found a baby bird. What should I do if its mother is gone?

I was walking my dogs and one of them brought me a baby bird. I took it home because I thought that was the best thing to do. After speaking to my boyfriend he said I should have left it so it’s mother could find it. I’ve taken it back and have watched it i from a distance for an hour and it’s mum still hasn’t come.
