Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 43 lbs
My dog Rowdy is 51 pounds. He is a Blue Tick/ Beagle mix, and the vet says he is Obese. While looking at the average weight for male Beagles are 22-24 pounds, but the average weight for an avergar male Blue Tick is 55-80. Should i cut down his diet? He gets 2 cups of food a day, and is moderately active, thanks!

Remember that being over weight or obese is based on the body condition score and not just the actual weight. If Rowdy is obese, he does need to loose weight but it should be slowly. Here are some helpful links about body condition scoring and weight loss: https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-do-i-determine-if-my-dog-is-overweight/ https://www.petcoach.co/article/weight-loss-programs/ You will either need to reduce his food intake or switch him to a lower calorie diet. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Weight loss is a marathon, not a sprint. Most overweight dogs should lose weight at roughly 1-2% of their body weight per week. The best way to achieve this is through portion controlled meals of a good quality balanced diet. Portions should be calculated based on a dog's ideal body weight, not necessarily their current weight. Make sure your dog is also getting plenty of exercise with frequent walks or games of fetch. Your veterinarian can help you to calculate the exact amount that you should be feeding your dog based on the calories per cup of the food you're offering, as well as your dog's current weight and body condition score.
