My dog groans and won't walk after tripping. Could he be hurt?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 years old | 60 lbs

Since last night my dog has been groaning a lot. He can walk fine, but doesn't seem to want to, when he's normally a very active dog. He's eating any drinking just fine, but doesn't wanna go to the bathroom much (because he has to walk outside). My fiance said he tripped while running earlier in the day, but if that's what it is, it didn't bother him for a couple hours. Nothing seems to faze him when I rub his hips/joints or stomach. What should I do?

It could be Niko is in pain. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Best of luck.
