My senior dog has a concerning hard lump on his ear. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | 17 lbs

My 10 year old dog has a concerning growth on his ear flap. It has been slowly enlarging in size, feels like a hardened mass growing out from the surface of his skin. I am hoping to get an idea of what this is exactly and am wondering if it’s one of those growths that develops in older dogs? He is otherwise active and his usual self.

It looks a bit like a cutaneous horn. The only way to know for certain is to have it examined by a vet. A cutaneous horn is rarely cancerous, but it can be irritating and it will continue to grow. Removal is commonly recommended for these.
