My dog's surgery staples are red and bulging. Should they be removed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 21 lbs

Shiro had surgery for a luxating patella a week ago. I was told to bring him in in two weeks to get the staples removed, but he is healing and his skin is starting to bulge around the staples. the top one is particularly bad. and is fairly red. He did get his e-collar off and git at them for a short bit, and can get too them if he likes down right so perhaps that's the problem. Should the staples be removed sooner?

The incision is not yet healed and they likely cannot come out until at least day #10. I do however recommend to have Shiro examined by the veterinarian since they are looking red. Make sure Shiro wears the elizabethan collar at all times. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
