My puppy has loose stool after vet meds. Is it lactose intolerance?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 18 days old | 30 lbs

My 5 month old puppy has loose stool when she goes. No other symptoms at all. Our vet gave her meds medicine for this and sent us on our way. I'm not impressed. She still loose stools 3 days later. Eating, drinking and acting like a normal puppy should. Any ideas/thoughts from you would be great. We have not changed her diet and does not eat our food. She has had cheese only. I'm wondering if she is lactose intolerant?

Dairy products can cause loose stools in some animals, so I would discontinue the cheese. There are a variety of causes of diarrhea, so I would recommend following-up with your veterinarian since their plan of action didn't resolve the issue. Stella may need to be screened for intestinal parasites or placed on a different diet or have an increase in fiber in her current diet. You can try a teaspoon of canned pumpkin twice a day with meals as a fiber source.
