I accidentally gave my dogs the wrong heart medication. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 8 years and 8 months old | 49 lbs

I have 2 dogs. 80 lb, 10 yr old neutered male pit bull with DCM. He’s prescribed 10 mg vetmedin twice a day. 8 year old spayed female pit bull with pulmonary hypertension, prescribed 20 mg sildenafil 2x a day. For the first time in 4+ years, I accidentally switched their meds today, and the vet is closed. Did I screw my dogs up bad? They seem fine.

No, mixing up these medications is unlikely to have any adverse events (other than possible mild gastrointestinal issues as with starting many medications). These medications are quite similar and indeed both have been used for treatment of both conditions. I would continue with their normal prescribed medications when their next dose is due
