Why did my young cat abandon her kittens after one passed away?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed

My cat that is one year old had kittens she seemed to love pretty much until one of them died. She then disappeared for a whole day or two. We called a shelter but they did not want to help at all and we tried feeding them but they are only one month old, they refused. The cat returned but did not want to spend any second with them. She let them die. I would like to know why did she abandon them like that as she used to be a very caring mom cat before it all happened.

Hi there. Some cats are naturally good mothers, and some aren't - especially when they're so young. A one-year old cat is still barely more than a kitten herself. So this is a sad situation, but not all that uncommon. I would recommend having her spayed now to prevent any further litters in the future.
