My cat has rib pain, won't jump, and eats less. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 years and 6 months old | 10 lbs

I started to pick up my cat Sebastian yesterday and he immediately growled/cried when I touched his ribs. I felt around and he seems to be in pain in his upper ribs under his front legs. We keep the screen up on the back door for him and his sister to come in and out but he won’t jump through the door or onto the counter where his food bowl is. Although he will jump into his favorite chair to lay down. His eating has changed in that he eats less but he’s still eating. What should I do?

I am sorry to hear about Sebastian! If he is a cat that goes outdoors we do always worry about an abscess from a wound brewing if we have an unknown pain. Otherwise, I would monitor him closely for the next few days. Watch his appetite, his energy level, his bowel movements and urination, his ability to move around normally. If any of these alter, I would recommend a vet exam, or if he is still acting painful a vet exam is recommended.
