My dog woke up twitching, eyes rolled back, unresponsive. Seizure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Peekapoo | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 11 lbs

My dog woke up from his sleep and was breathing heavily with his tongue out and started twitching and rolled his eyes back. When I tried waking him up to see if he was ok he wouldn’t move. It was like he was unconscious or something. What does that mean ?

The two big rule outs here would be seizure activity or syncope (like a fainting spell) that could be due to an underlying heart condition. I suggest you get him to your vet for an exam as soon as possible.

He may have been dreaming and stretching, true seizure activity is usually accompanied byy other signs such as involuntary urination etc. Continue to monitor closely for any other signs of confusion or twitching which should be checked by your vet. Video any unusual episodes if possible

You need to take him to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked, seizures can be partial in some cases and the dog would seem awake when it happens. muscle spasm can also be caused by intoxication and other neurological conditions, some of them life threatening.
