Help! My rescue dog has black diarrhea with red mucus. OTC options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered

Letty was severely abused before I got her. She was in a crate for over 2 weeks by choice before coming into my home. I have had her 7 weeks and can not pet her yet as she runs under the bed from me. She has recently started having diarrhea that is black in color with red mucus. I gave her boiled chicken and rice for a few days then she stopped eating it and went back to her grain free chicken dry feed. What else can I do as a vet trip is not an option at this time? Anything otc?

Unfortunately there isn't anything OTC you can give Letty, it's quite serious that she is have black diarrhea with red mucus. That tells me she is having bleeding from both the upper and lower intestines, and must be checked out by a vet. I would see if there is a vet in your area who does house calls or a mobile vet. They could come to your house to see her, saving you from taking her to the vet. Best of luck.
