How to stop one male budgie from hogging food from his brother?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 1 day old

I have two male budgies. They love being together and are good brothers overall, when I change the food they bother get very excited because in sprinkle some nutritional yeast in the morning for them. Is it normal for one of the male budgies to not let the other eat? When I first place in the bowl Echo the younger brother runs too it and doesn't let Quiz eat. They fight, there's no screaming or chasing, and he let's quiz eat after when he's done, is a dominance things? Should I worry?

Yes, this sounds like a dominance behavior. Is there any reason that you can't add a second dish and split the food between the two dishes? I would try that to see if that helps. It may however, make it worse as Echo may flitter back and forth between the bowls trying to be in two places at once and it may cause more anxiety. All you can do is try and if adding a second dish makes the problem worse then just go back to what you are currently doing. As long as Quiz is able to eventually eat and is maintaining his weight I would not be all that concerned.
