How do vets choose stitch type and strength for my pet's surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 10 months old | 72 lbs

What factors does a Vet use when deciding between disolvable stitches and stitches that need to be removed as well as the thickness of the stitches -- are there different 'strengths'?

Factors that may affect our choice in suture would include the type of surgery/location of the sutures in the body as well as the size of the animal, the activity level or lifestyle of the animal. A thicker suture usually has more "strength" but is also harder to work with/tie knots so a surgeon uses multiple factors to decide the best suture for the job.
