Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 13 years and 2 months old | 96 lbs
My dog was prescribed 600mg/day of Gabapentin as an adjunct to Meloxicam for arthritic knee pain. I read that 1.4 mg per pound of weight is the standard dose for dogs for pain. 600 mg seems excessive. What in your opinion is the standard dose for a 90-lb. male lab mix who’s 13 years old (a senior dog)? Thanks.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Jack. For pain control in dogs, the dose can go as high at 5mg per pound, which would be 450mg. But it can be used up to 10mg per pound for dogs with seizures, so this isn't an overdose. It may be he needs the extra pain control. but I would speak to your vet about your concerns. Best of luck.

So the dosage for gabepentin is 5-10mg/kg three times a day, so if Riley is getting 600mg total per day, this is within the normal dose. Some patients can be put up to as high as 40mg/kg a day, which would mean that his dose is within the range.

They may be compounded tablets. Often if vets cannot get a medication at a lower strength, they will get them compounded to the strength they need. I suggest you contact your vet when you get a chance to confirm what you are giving. In the meantime you can give it as directed. Gabapentin has a pretty wide dosing range. For treatment for seizures in cats, gabapentin is started at 2.5 to 5 mg per pound (5 to 10 mg/kg) every 8 to 12 hours. Doses up to 10 mg per pound every 6 hours has been used in some cats. For pain control in cats, doses range from 1.5 to 5 mg per pound (1.25 to 2.5 mg/kg) every 12 hours. Higher doses (up to 50 mg per cat 1 to 3 times daily) are recommended by some vets. So, even if you are giving 100mg twice a day it should not be harmful. She may just be very sleepy if it is a higher dose than what was intended.
