Cat dry skin: Can I apply fish oil directly or use ear drops?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 years and 4 months old | 13.5 lbs

Hi. Winky boy has dry skin where he has white flecks on his black fur. Our vet recommended using fish oil in his food. I tried that but he won't eat it. Is it safe to put it on him directly and comb it in? Also his ears are itching, and I was wondering if it's safe to put ear mite drops in his ears as a precaution? I'm not sure what to look for to look for mites. Thank you

The fish oil works best if eaten, it will just make Winky Boy's fur greasy is applied to him. I would hide the fish oil in a fish based wet food to see if he will eat it. As for his ears, ear mites are typically found in younger kittens. He could have a bacterial or yeast ear infection. I'd take him into the vet to have his ear examined and diagnosed so they can be treated correctly.
