What is this black thing coming out of my puppy's spay incision?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | BullBoxer | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 18 days old | 6 lbs

My puppy was spayed about two months ago. after about a month her spay incision became red and swollen and our vet prescribed some antibiotics. The swelling and redness went away and everything healed fine, except now she has this stiff black scab coming out of her incision. I’m not sure if it’s actually a scab or if it could be something else. It doesn’t seem infected and it doesn’t seem to bother her at all. She’s been perfectly fine. What could this be?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can’t be 100% sure without seeing Ripley but it looks like the suture knot from under her skin. This isn’t uncommon. It’s not emergent but I would take her to her vet when you can and they can snip the knot off. The incision underneath and in the skin has healed so it’s not a problem to cut off the knot. Kisses to Ripley!
