My dog barks and lunges at strangers near home. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 55 lbs

I’m concerned with Roscos behavior towards strangers that are near my house. If the neighbor comes out or even a stranger walking down the street he barks & try’s lunging... the hairs on his back stand up. If we were at the dog park or anywhere away from my house he’s perfectly fine but he seem to be acting to protective of myself and my home. I don’t want people to be scared of my dog because he really is a good dog but it’s getting out of hand how he acts with people near my house.. plz help.

I strongly recommend you consult with a professional, in-home dog trainer. You need a trainer to come to your house and see the behavior and the interaction of all the family members with Roscoe. This is your best bet. Aggression problems need special care and it is not recommended that you try to correct this on your own. You may give him the wrong signals and make him worse. Especially with his breed you need to do this right from the start. ( http://www.daytondogtrainer.com/ )
