My guppy fry have bent backs. Are they in pain? Will they survive?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Unknown - Fish | 1 month and 2 days old

Hey so I brought my daughter a few guppies not knowing they were going to breed anyway one ended up being really fat and my daughter put it in another tank and it gave birth. There now a month old and I looked at them closely and it turns out two of them have bent back but they are swimming around on the top eating fine at they look totally fine, do you think they would be in pain? Should I put them in a different tank? Will they survive to adulthood? Or should I get rid of them?

It's unlikely the fish are in pain. This defect could be due to many things including inbreeding, exposure to toxins during pregnancy or another cause. The decision to keep or cull fish is up to you. These fish will live normal, happy fish lives. I DO recommend however to maintain two tanks (a male tank and a female tank) and separate the males and the females or you will end up with a lot of fish. It's likely many of the females are already pregnant if they have been housed with males so you will need to separate the male and female babies as soon as you can tell the sex. I hope this helps.
