Is Hycosan Night Gel a safe alternative for my dog's dry eye?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Whippet | Male | neutered | 7 years old

My dog ate his eye medication yesterday (Lacri-Lube), and I went everywhere looking for more, but nowhere has it, except the vets, but they’re out all day today. I asked around all the pharmacies around mine, and they all said Hycosan Night Gel is the same, but none of them knew if it was okay for dogs. Is it okay to use Hycosan Night Gel on dogs, for dry eye?

You can use it in a pinch but I would not use it long term as it contains Vitamin A. Vitamin A is fat soluble vitamin and can stay in the body a long time as it's stored in fat. I don't know if it would cause an overdose of Vitamin A long term but I would not risk it. So, yes, use it for now, but as soon as the vet gets stock you should go back to using the Lacri-Lube. You could also use this: ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/Xailin-Night-Lubricating-Eye-Ointment/dp/B01CAQ3UPI/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=EX1H9OBLBXQ&keywords=xailin+night+eye+ointment&qid=1563278368&s=gateway&sprefix=xailin+night%2Caps%2C282&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&smid=A8FWVXVAMXNC9 )
