Why does my kitten have belly fluid despite negative FIP test?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Wirehair | Male | neutered | 5 months and 22 days old

Hi, so my 7 month old kitty suddenly had a belly full of fluids. I assumed he was just gaining weight but in fact it was fluids in the stomach area. Tested twice for coronavirus and it came back negative on both occasions, fluids were drained and it seems to be less fluids. Doctor tested the fluids and he thinks it’s positive however my kitten does not have any symptoms. His active and is eating well and urinal and stool is normal. Can this be a misdiagnoses? Please help

Fluid in the abdomen is called ascites. I agree with your vet that FIP (coronovirus) is the most likely due to your cat's age but there are some other possibilities (none of them good): 1. heart disease 2. tumor/cancer 3. liver disease Coronavirus is constantly mutating so it is actually not easy to test for. I'm not sure what tests your vet did but that may be why they are getting negatives. I suggest you refer to this link for more information and go over this with your vet.
