Why is my neutered cat suddenly aggressive and hissing outdoors?

My boy Tumbles is an indoor neutered cat that I have trained to walk outside on a leash and harness. Hes usually pretty excellent at it, but I took him out for a stroll earlier today and he acted very erratic and agressive after sniffing around a certain part of our house to the point where I had to pick him up and rush him back inside. Not sure if it was a territorial thing or not, but he was very agressive and I was shocked to hear him hiss and growl because it was a first. Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 11 lbs
