My dog bled after spay, low platelets. Why K1 tablets given?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 4 months old | 84 lbs

Hi, my pet has been spaded recently and she had severe bleeding after the operation from the wound. The vets said her platelets were low and gave me k1 tablets to give her. Before the opp they done a blood test and all was fine. My dog nearly died as a result of this and they just said its an unusual occurrence. What do you think happen and Why did my vet give me k1 tablets for blood clotting as this is for rat or mouse poisoning?

Your veterinarian is correct that this is very uncommon. They likely gave the medication to treat rat poisoning just in case. You may also want to look into genetic testing to see if Bella carries a mutated gene that increases her risk of bleeding since this is very important to know moving forward for the rest of her life. The best person to answer is your veterinarian. Veterinarians would rather clients ask all the questions so that they can be sure clients understand the rationale behind medical decisions. I’m glad Bella is doing well now and please feel free to post any additional questions.
