My cat fears my husband after grooming. Can we reintroduce them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 5 years and 5 months old | 17 lbs

Hi, my husband and I got a 5 year old domestic cat who shows signs of fear and anxiety. We got her 3 months ago. We didn't do the "intro process" as she seemed to be very relaxed. That was probably our error. My husband tried to groom her nails 3 weeks in, she hissed at him and he put her in her room where she then peed in the hallway on the way. Ever since; she's been on and off with him. Should we begin her 2 week process as we should have from the beginning? She runs if he's in the same area

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Mia. Many cats do not like their nails clipped, and they can punish the owner by peeing on things as well as hissing. Cats really like to use their urine to punish owners. My brother had a girlfriend our old cat HATED, and she would pee in shoes and on his bag whenever he came home from being out with her! They can be vindictive. This is to say you didn't necessarily do anything wrong by not doing the intro process, but given she is now a little off with your husband, I think it would be a good idea to try now. I hope this helps!
