My dog took too much dexamethasone. What symptoms should I watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Puggle | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 20 lbs

My dog sitter didn't follow the instructions for the dexamethasone the vet prescribed. Instead of every other day, she gave him a .75 mg dose every day. He's a 20lb puggle mix. He seems mostly ok, but I noticed lots of flaky skin coming off when I comb him. He also has a nasty scab/wound area where he apparently scratched so much that he bled. I've left a message for the vet but it's the weekend so it'll take a couple days. What should I look for or be concerned about with this med overuse?

I don't think I would be overly worried about this. Dexamethasone is a fairly weak steroid. Just go back to giving it to him every other day until you speak to your vet. If he has a scabby wound then he will likely need antibiotics. Steroids (even the weak ones) will decrease the body's immune response so they tend to infections easily.
