My pet's surgery wound is bleeding. Should I clean it or wait for vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 6 months old | 12 lbs

Cezare had a tumor removed Friday morning. Today, I noticed a bit of redness and a few spots of blood from the incision. It looks like perhaps it tore open a bit. While we wait for our vet to open tomorrow morning, is there anything I can do or just leave it alone? Should I clean it with Betadine or something else or wait? Any and all recommendations would be greatly appreciated until we can check in with his vet tomorrow. He doesn’t appear to have any oozing or fever, etc

Hi there. From what I can see in the photos, this doesn't look too bad at all - but if it's been bleeding a bit, it's always a good idea to have it checked by your vet to make sure everything is okay. Until then, you can have Cezare wear a baby onesie or something similar to help protect it, especially if he has been scratching at it or attempting to lick it. it's also fine if you want to clean it with some Betadine solution, or apply a small amount of topical Neosporin to the area. Other than that, I would just leave it alone until your veterinarian can take a look.
