My dog's black growth tore off. How do I treat the wound? Vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Terrier | Male | neutered | 12 years and 6 months old | 20 lbs

Jack had what looked like a black colored mole or growth. A year ago it was a lot smaller. This morning after rolling around on the grass onto the pavement, the black ‘covering’ was torn off. What should I do to treat the wound? Do I need to take him to the vet and if so, is it an emergency or can I make a regular appointment?

I'd gently clean it with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. Best of luck.
