My cat has diarrhea after surgery. Is it normal? When to worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 4 years old | 0 lbs

My cat got stitches Thursday. Theyre getting way better since and the gap has gotten smaller (my vet told me she left them a little loose?) She was hiding in my closet til today she’s been out and roaming around the house again but, she has had diarrhea almost all day maybe due to stress? so I wasn’t sure if it’s caused by her vet trip Thursday. She’s still eating great and drinking and moving around. I don’t know when I need to become concerned. I’m just a worried person about my baby

The incision is holding together. Yes, typically the stitches are not pulled tight at the time of surgery to allow for the skin swelling that naturally occurs after the surgery. As for the diarrhea, it could be due to stress or any medications Ella was given after surgery. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.
