My dog needs a permanent tracheostomy. What's life like for them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Follow-up question regarding my American Bully "Gunney". Unfortunately, they were unable to do the tie-back procedure due to there being bone instead of cartilage behind the flaps. He currently has a temporary trach in place and is being monitored. We have been discussing putting in a permanent trach. Are there any alternative surgeries besides the tie-back? What are your experiences with dogs who have permanent trachs? The medical literature I have found is not encouraging

Dogs can live just fine with a permanent tracheostomy. You just have to be diligent keeping it clean. I have put these in horses permanently with no issues as well He should be able to lead a normal life - just no swimming and be careful not to get water into the trach when bathing him.
