Pet coughing after liquid medicine: Is it going down their lungs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 9 lbs

Hi Dr Melanie. Moon has been coughing the last 3 days of medicine. I think it may have been going down his lungs. Should i take him to see a vet? I dont want to make him sick or kill him. It is liquid amoxicillin my husband and I have been giving him. The first few times he would not cough he would just lick his mouth but after 2 days he has been coughing and i gently pat his back. What can i do? Is this an emergency? Thank you!

Thank you for more information about Moon. If he has been coughing and you are concerned that the medication has gone down his lungs, yes, I would take him into a vet. It could cause aspiration pneumonia if it did go down his lungs. If Moon is eating, drinking, and is otherwise normal, you can wait until the morning to have him seen by a vet. If he isn't eating or drinking, and/or is very lethargic, have him seen by an ER vet now. Best of luck.
