My dog is licking a spot on his back. Is it a bite? When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog has a weird... spot on his back. It isn’t exactly a lump. He keeps trying to lick it and bite at it. We don’t see blood and he doesn’t get defensive when we touch/get near him. He only went outside recently and we didn’t see him get hurt, or something. Could he have been bit by something? Do we need to take him to the emergency vet?

He might have been bitten or injured himself. I don't think this requires an ER vet visit, but keep an eye on him. In case he did get bit by something, if you see hives, swelling of the face and muzzle, or difficulty breathing, have him seen by an ER vet right away. Otherwise, take him into the vet in the morning. Put an Ecollar on him tonight to keep him from biting at it. I will put a link below on how to make one at home. Best of luck. http://dogsaholic.com/care/homemade-dog-cone.html
