Why is my dog biting and scratching his back and ear until he bleeds?

he wont stop biting himself and scratching, my boyfriend thinks it may be allergic reaction , where hes bleeding is almost at his tail on his back and other pic is his ear. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 6 months old | 52 lbs
