Why is my new hamster suddenly sleeping after cage cleaning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male

I’ve had my Syrian hamster for four days and I decided to clean the cage. I cleaned during the evening around 8:30 when the hamster was active. I didn’t give it a full clean and I made sure to leave most of the bedding intact. I took the hamster out and put him in a ball. After I was done, I put him back into the cage. For the past three nights he was active during the night but after I put him back he slept through the night (I went to bed at 12:30). Should I be worried?

No, I would not be overly worried. He may just be tired from stress. Just keep an eye on him and if he isn't better in 24 hours you should take him to a vet for an exam. He may be coming down with an illness; very common, especially if purchased at a pet store.
