Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 70 lbs
I am a veterinary technician myself and am currently going through further education in nutrition for cats/dogs. I have a personal pet with hereditary nasal parakeratosis (HPNK) - maanged with continuous Aquaphor treatments. I have just finished reading about zinc deficiencies - how a genetic disorder in zinc malabsoprtion and metabolism can cause hyper- & - parakeratosis as well as dull coats. I am interested in understanding if zinc supplementation is a possibility to help manage the problem a

Was the HPNK diagnosed with a skin biopsy or is this just an assumptive diagnosis? Zinc is needed for cell replication and is thus essential for the regeneration of the intestinal mucosa, the healing of wounds and the turnover of epithelial cells necessary to maintain healthy skin, hair and nails. Too much zinc can cause toxicity so it is not recommended you supplement him unless you have a proper diagnosis. If you have not had a skin biopsy done that would be the next step.
