Could my cat's tail hair loss without scratching be a thyroid problem?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 12 lbs

My cat is losing her fur around her tail. She doesn’t scratch or bite the area. Could it b a thyroid problem ? If so, I will take her in for blood work.

The most common sign of a thyroid problem in cats is weight loss. Hair loss around the tail could be secondary to a skin infection, fleas, allergies, etc. The best thing would be to schedule an appointment with your vet for a physical examination to determine the cause and treat. Your cat may need an antibiotic and/or an anti-inflammatory to treat.
