Why does my dog's kibble clump in her stomach and get gagged up?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | spayed | 10 years and 7 months old | 19 lbs

Can kibble occasionally clump in the stomach? Twice (about a month apart) our Boston gagged up a hard clump of what looks like her kibble. She’s otherwise completely fine. No other symptoms other than the clump?

Hello. Technically, no, the kibble should not clump. But, if for some reason, the kibble is not moving quickly enough out of the stomach, this could present as regurgitation of a bolus of kibble. Maggie may just occassionally overeat, or eat too fast & this may initiate the problem, or she may have something else going on with her upper GI tract. If the episodes are pretty rare, then just monitor the situation, but if the frequency increases to multiple times a month or more, then please see your veterinarian for further diagnostics/treatment.
