My cat just gave birth. Is some blood and not cleaning normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 2.4 lbs

Cat just gave birth to 6 kittens. It's her first litter. Everything seems fine, she is now nursing them. But I spotted a certain quantity of blood (not much, just stuck to her legs and in the blanket. In the blanket there are some spots of blood too, but not much. I was wondering if it's normal? She cleaned herself mid labor but she's still pretty dirty and she's just laying there and nursing her kitties, she's not cleaning up her legs and paws...

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Winky. Giving birth is a bloody process, and she may be too busy focusing on her kittens to clean up fully. You can take a damp cloth, and wipe her down gently if she will let you. Best of luck.
