My cat's burst abscess from a fight: When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 years old | 17 lbs

Hi. My 9 year old indoor cat got out a week ago and I heard him in a cat fight. He seemed fine but there was a lump. Now a week later he has a bald patch where I can see a cat claw puncture that curves up. The lump is gone. It seems dry but the skin is rough and hard and it must be sore as he doesn’t like me touching it. My other cat is licking it. I’ve cleaned it now that I can see it and put antibiotic cream. Any other help is appreciated.

If Felix got out, he may have gotten into a fight with another cat, gotten bitten, and it turned into an abscess. It sounds like the abscess has burst, but if it's painful, he does need to see a vet. I would take him into one first thing in the morning.
