Why does my dog's anus swell and protrude when she defecates?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | spayed | 6 years and 11 months old

What is wrong with my dog’s anus? Whenever she defecates, it swells and protrudes; a minute later, it will subside and look relatively normal again. I’ll be taking her to the vet tomorrow, but I’d just like to know what to expect.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are a few things that can cause this such as parasites and in uncommon instances cancer such as lymphoma, among other possibilities. Your veterinarian would be able to examine her more closely and see what seems likely so that therapy can be started. Hopefully it is just a case of parasites as it is most of the time. Best of luck!
