My dog is aggressive and lunged at me. Is neutering the answer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 155 lbs

My dog is very protective of my children, and is more so with one particular child. I went to wake my child this morning before I left for work, and my dog lunged at me, growling and open mouthed. We have had him since he was 4 months old. He is a Great Dane, and is now 20 months old. I am at a loss of what to do. I’m afraid he may attack one of my other children, or myself. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated! He is not neutered.

Neutering Bruce would be the first step. I would also speak to his vet about getting him into professional behavioral training. I never recommend owners work with aggressive dogs on their own due to safety issues. I would be fearful for you and your children as well, and do not allow him alone with them for now.
