My puppy walks flat-footed after splint removal. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 months and 28 days old | 38 lbs

My puppy has just recently gotten out of a splint on her left rear leg for a broken toe after 3 and a half weeks. She is walking flat footed. Is this common or would it indicate something is still wrong?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Summitt. Sometimes a dog's gait will be different after a splint is removed. This is due to the fact that muscles have not been used as much while it was on. It can take some time to rebuild some strength. However, if she is not making progress walking more normally, she needs to see her veterinarian. Most of the time, I see the normal gait return within several days. I hope this information helps!
