Why is my senior dog breathing hard, body moving, and gagging?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | 11 years and 2 months old | 60 lbs

My 11 year old dog has had trouble breathing and I can’t tell what the problem is. I thought it was backwards sneezing. But it’s more like heavy quick breaths out and quick 1 second shallow breaths in. His whole body moves with him. He has episodes of this, usually in the middle of the night is when it’s his worst. I’ve woken up around 2-3 am the last couple days to help the episode stop. Today he also gagged a little during his episode.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pickles. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. Any change in breathing can be significant. He could be experiencing a respiratory tract infection such as a cold or pneumonia, other lung disease or even heart problems can cause changes in breathing. His veterinarian will examine him and try to determine the source of his issues. X-rays of his chest may be recommended. I hope this information helps!
