My cat's jaw wound looks infected and painful. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

My cat has a circular gash in her jaw thats about 1-1.5inches wide. My mom doesn't think she needs to go to the vet but the pus scab came off and now it looks like we can see the muscle or something. It looks pretty gross and she yowls when we try to clean it with a damp towel or tissue.

That appears to be infected. I recommend to have Noelle examined by the veterinarian. Infections can spread to the blood stream and it sounds like she is in pain as well. she will likely need the hair clipped away, the area cleaned, an antibiotic, a pain medication and an elizabethan collar to protect the area from further wounds. Try to have her examined within the next 24 hours. I hope she starts feeling better quickly!
