My cat ate a bird. What health issues should I be worried about?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Female | 15 lbs

Miss Deighomay hunted and killed a bird this morning. I didn’t know she had it until I saw the feather evidence. Which means she must of devored the whole thing!! Is there anything I really need to be worried about? I know that it’s normal for cats to hunt and kill small animals. She’s fully vaccinated, and is really healthy all the way around. Is this something I need to even worry about?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would recommend that you monitor her for signs of a gastrointestinal obstruction such as vomiting, nausea and/or abdominal pain. If any of these are observed, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, she could be just fine. Have a great day!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be an issue as it may cause gastrointestinal upset and most importantly it can cause a gastrointestinal obstruction. I would recommend that you monitor her closely for signs of a gastrointestinal issue such as inappetence, vomiting and/or abdominal pain. If any of these are observed, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment then. Hoping for the best!
