My dog's lip is red and neck fur rubbed off. What can I apply?

Hi there, Our little beagle Jasper went missing for 4 days in the woods. So happy we found him yesterdday! We noticed on him, since he was sniffing so much his lip is now red/burnt from being on the ground so much and his neck got the fur taken off from his collar rubbing so much. We're just wondering if this is something he would need a special ointment to help it heal properly or maybe putting polysporin or coconut oil on it instead if he doesn't need a special ointment? Thanks so much Adèle

I'm so glad Jasper is home! It's also possible (aside from a thermal burn) that redness is a chemical burn, scabies or an allergic reaction. At home you can wash the lesion with soap once and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just the spot, try to keep soap out of his mouth and nose). Protect the area from licking or scratching and he may need to wear an elizabethan collar. Once it is dried, you can apply a dab of coconut oil once a day and rub it in well. If it doesn't start looking better within about a week or if it gets worse, have him examined by his veterinarian who may prescribe medications. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is something he needs to see a veterinarian for. He likely sustained some trauma and he needs to be properly evaluated. That looks painful and he would likely benefit from an anti-inflammatory drug and antibiotics. Hoping for a speedy recovery! Have a great day!
