My dog is bleeding profusely from his privates. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 70 lbs

My dog had two purple, non-cancerous cysts near his privates. Yesterday he started bleeding a little, but it stopped. Today he is bleeding pools of blood and blood seems to be coming from his wiener also. He keeps licking it and trying to clean up the blood. I wanted to apply pressure, but I can't cover his privates. He is bleeding so much right now that I won't be able to transport him in my car to a vet. What should I do to stop the bleeding?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Braxton needs to see a vet as soon as possible. I would try some kind of wrap around his belly or maybe put a shirt on him so you can transport him now. It is likely pressure alone won’t stop the bleeding and it needs to be addressed. There isn’t anything at home you can give him or product to put on it to stop the bleeding without causing an infection. Good luck and kisses to Braxton!
