Why is my cat peeing outside, orange urine, pooping? Is he sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 11 years and 3 months old | 18 lbs

My cat has been peeing outside of the litter box and his urine is almost orange. He has also been pooping just outside of the litter box. I can't tell if he doesn't like the new box or if he's sick. A couple months ago I noticed he was drinking a lot of water but I can't be sure if that behavior is still happening. I always assumed he peed out of the litterbox to spite me bc he's dramatic like that but in the past few months he has peed outside the box around 8 times.

The orange color of Rusty's urine isn't normal, and that can signify a health problem. As for pooping outside the box, it could be he doesn't like the new box. Cats can be very picky about their litter boxes. I would take him into the vet first thing in the morning to have the problem with his urine checked out.
