My dog heaves after eating, no vomit, just mucus. Should I call vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 28 lbs

My dog is 2 years old. Out of no where he started breathing in really violently and acting like he was going to vomit. Like heaving. But he didn’t throw anything up. A little bit of mucus came out once. Otherwise he is acting completely normal. He is fine but after he eats something, he does it again, then after a few seconds he’s fine again. What could this be? Emergency vet trip? Can it wait until tomorrow morning? He’s acting normally otherwise. Normal breathing, not panting.

It could be James is feeling nauseous and wants to vomit, but nothing is coming up. Given that he is completely normal otherwise, I would watch him for now and take him into the vet first thing in the morning. Best of luck.
