Dog cut on neck near spay cone. Will rubbing cause infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltipoo | Female | 6 lbs

I accidentally cut my dogs skin while grooming her, She was spayed a week ago and the cone matted her fur. The cut happens to be on her neck where her cone lies and there is another week left with the cone. Will the cone cause an infection on the small cut? I applied neosporin on the cut but I am worried that the cone will rub up against her cut and make things worse.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear Macey got a cut. Without seeing how deep the cu is or whether it is located on her neck, I have some difficulty in advising you about the cone. I would recommend reaching out to your regular veterinarian for further advice or taking a peek at her cut to see if it is a concern. In order to protect her spay site, you can also buy post-surgical dog "onesies" that would mean she wouldn't need a cone collar but she wouldn't be able to get at her stitches as well. Good luck!
