My male dog is bleeding from his penis after mating, is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 105 lbs

My Bernese male mounted our female Bernese who is in heat. We are mating them. We believe he entered but did not seem to tie up. If he did it wasn’t long. He is now bleeding droplets from his penis. It stops but starts back up when active. Just happened last night. Should he be seen or will he be ok if it stops on it’s own. This is his first time. He’s 3 and she’s 2 1/2. She is fine.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The safest thing would be to have him evaluated by a veterinarian so that the area can be looked at more closely. They can make sure this is not something due to trauma or perhaps an infection before continuing to mate. Have a great day!

It could be that Tony sustained trauma to his penis during the mating, and that's causing the bleeding. I would apply gently pressure to his penile area to try to stop the bleeding. If that doesn't stop the bleeding, or his penis continues to bleed on and off, then I would have him seen by a vet.
